STRENGTHENING BUSINESS COOPERATION IN THE APEC REGION

As international business expands in the Asia-Pacific region, companies there will share a growing range of common interests and concerns. The need for promoting communication among business communities in the region is greater than ever. That need is all the greater in connection with the importance of voicing and reflecting the views of the private sector in such forums as APEC.

Keidanren is committed to promoting stronger ties among private-sectors in the Asia-Pacific region. The Asian Neighbors Forum it hosted this March is one example of that commitment. Another is the APB-Net (Asia Pacific Business Network), a network of business leaders from APEC countries. They will gather for the second time in the latter half of next year in Osaka. Keidanren will host that gathering in cooperation with other business federations in Japan and other nations.

Private-sector business has served as the engine of economic growth in the Asia-Pacific region. And business will fulfill a crucial role in promoting intraregional cooperation. Keidanren will dispatch a mission early next year to the ASEAN countries and Vietnam to exchange views with government and business leaders in those nations. With an eye to the upcoming 1995 APEC gathering in Osaka, Keidanren is conveying the views of the private sector to the government level talks. And it will be working hard to get those views reflected in actual government policies.
