Chairman's Message

Chairman
MITARAI Fujio

Nippon Keidanren published its long term vision for the future, "The Land of Hope: Japan" in January 2007. Its purpose is to set forth a series of action plans so that ten years from now, Japan will be a country of "open opportunity and fair competition," enjoy the "respect and friendship from countries worldwide," and be "a nation of abundance and spiritual fulfillment."

These goals will be impossible for Japan to reach if it sticks with precedence and sectionalism. Rather, Japan should employ a bold and creative approach to renovate the entire economy and society.

Problems are mounting in Japan: Increasing competition caused by globalization; increasing awareness of the global environment; distorted demographic balances such as decreasing population, among others. These pressing challenges require new tools in order to enhance technology development, realign and enhance regional economy, restructure tax policies, promote economic partnership agreements with more trading partners, and overhaul social security programs.

As lifestyles have diversified, it has become necessary to recognize differences among individuals and accordingly, to reform economic and social systems that honors work-styles of individuals and to reform the labor market so that those with a will to work can receive necessary help.

In seeking to resolve some of these thorny issues, I would like to converse with concerned persons on today's more complex topics. Earning public understanding is essential in walking towards the future.

Nippon Keidanren is dedicated in seeking Japan's bright future. We invite you to join hands with us.
