Protection of the Environment
The Keidanren Global Environment Charter, published in 1991, shows the importance Keidanren and all its member companies place on environmental protection. The Charter states:
"Each company must aim at being a good global corporate citizen, recognizing that grappling with environmental problems is essential to its own existence and its activities."
The Charter calls for the development and supply of innovative technologies, products and services promoting the conservation of energy and resources, and the preservation of the environment. As is well known, Japan has some of the world's most advanced technologies for reducing industrial pollution and conserving energy and other resources. The Charter asks companies to find ways to transfer their pollution- prevention technology and conservation expertise overseas.
Keidanren's Committee on Environment and Safety recommends policy measures aimed at solving environmental problems (including global ones), and encourages companies to save resources through such measures as recycling. For its part, the Committee on Energy and Resources considers ways to ensure a stable supply of cheap, high-quality energy and resources, and studies such problems as energy conservation and the use of renewable energy sources for the future.
The Keidanren Nature Conservation Fund Initiative was established in 1992. The Fund supports nature conservation projects organized by NGOs in developing countries.
