Chairman Okuda's Press Conference

May 27, 2004

Following is the gist of remarks made by Mr. Hiroshi Okuda, Chairman of Nippon Keidanren at a press conference following fiscal 2004 general assembly meeting on 27 May 2004. Translation is rush and tentative, and sequence of the gist does not necessarily coincide with words delivered.

(Asked to review first two years of Chairmanship and on priorities in next two years)
During the first two years, I wanted to promote dynamism in Japan's society and economy through allowing and comparing multiple value systems. Also, for businesses attaining trust and empathy of the society at large is a must before achieving prosperity.
Regarding how much has been achieved on Keidanren vision published in 2003, I have to say that not enough have been achieved. During the next two years, I will try to bring these proposals to life. The top priority is to realize a social security framework which is combined with tax and fiscal policies.

(Asked why Keidanren proposes political donations now)
Keidanren believes that providing money for politics is a part of important social contribution. Keidanren hopes that money provided will work towards improving policy drafting capability of political parties, thus strengthening political leadership.

(Asked on the purpose of the new committee)
Keidanren established today a new comittee. It will study on how Japan should position itself in the current globe where terrorism and other international issues such as Iraq and North Korea arise. As an important part of the country, business sector should take a part in studying such issues.
