Chairman Okuda's Press Conference

June 14, 2004

Following is the gist of remarks made by Hiroshi Okuda, Chairman, Keidanren at a scheduled press conference following monthly Chairman and Vice Chairmen's meeting on 14 June 2004. Translation is rush and tentative, and sequence of the gist does not necessarily coincide with words delivered.

(Asked on long-term interest rate and BOJ's zero-interest rate policy)
The current level is of no cause for alarms, but the case is otherwise if it continues to rise. BOJ has been saying that it will look at the market that should have non-declining prices for several months in row before terminating its zero-interest rate policy, and I agree them it.

(On declining birthrate)
Government, as well as employers and labor unions must work towards increasing birthrate. Companies would have to consider employing more aged, women, and foreign workers if the trend of declining birthrate would persist.

(On repeated news of flaw by Mitsubishi Motors Corporation)
It is regrettable that former President was arrested. I do sincerely hope that the issue would be resolved soon. As disciplinary measures, Keidanren has already asked Mitsubishi Motors to voluntarily suspend membership activities and to withdraw from becoming member of the Board of Directors, and Keidanren might take another disciplinary measures depending on future development.

(Asked on direction of discussion in the Committee on Constitutional Policy)
The new committee will review recent Keidanren position papers as how they relate to Japan's Constitution and its national security policies from perspectives of their possible changes, as the background study in the beginning.

(Asked for comment on Japan's Self-Defense Forces (SDF) taking part in the coalition forces)
It appears inevitable that SDF will take part in the coalition forces if its activities will be limited to humanitarian assistance and/or logistics support.
