Chairman Okuda's Press Conference

June 28, 2004

Following is the gist of remarks made by Hiroshi Okuda, Chairman, Keidanren at a scheduled press conference 28 June 2004. Translation is rush and tentative, and sequence of the gist does not necessarily coincide with words delivered.

(Asked on the status of Japan's economy)
Statistical figures show good signs. However, growth of small and medium sized companies as well as regional economy are delaying -- they must wait a little longer until domestic economic cycle starts to roll in the positive direction. Domestic demand should improve as digital household appliances are expected to sell as the Olympic games approach. I expect sustained growth unless Iraq situation, the U. S. economy or Chinese economies deteriorate, or interest rate or foreign exchanges sharply fluctuate.

(Asked on submitting an alternative to planned revision of Antimonopoly Act)
JFTC is planning to submit a revised draft law in the autumn and Keidanren should be able to submit the alternative in similar timing.

(On reforming Social Insurance Agency)
There could be several different ways to make the Agency work, including sending business people into it or merging it with National Tax Agency. The discussion is halted until end of the election.
