Chairman Okuda's Press Conference

July 12, 2004

Following is the gist of remarks made by Hiroshi Okuda, Chairman, Keidanren at a scheduled press conference following monthly Chairman and Vice Chairmen's meeting on 12 July 2004. Translation is rush and tentative, and sequence of the gist does not necessarily coincide with words delivered.

(On election results)
It is welcome to find "the candidate of the business community" win a seat in the election. Keidanren will continue to take part in Japan's politics through policy evaluations and financial contributions.
LDP lost a couple of seats but the ruling bloc will keep a stable majority in House of Councilors. This should not affect much on Prime Minister Koizumi's drive towards structural reforms including privatization of the post office businesses and establishment of a comprehensive social security system.

(On possible cooperation towards reforming Social Insurance Agency)
Reform plans would have to be thoroughly discussed. Keidanren would cooperate as much as it could.
