Chairman Okuda's Press Conference

September 13, 2004

Following is the gist of remarks made by Hiroshi Okuda, Chairman, Keidanren at a scheduled press conference following monthly Chairman and Vice Chairmen's meeting on 13 September 2004. Translation is rush and tentative, and sequence of the gist does not necessarily coincide with words delivered.

(On Koizumi cabinet's decision to privatize post office)
The cabinet's decision to privatize the post office is the result of Prime Minister Koizumi's strong leadership. However, one would have to expect a wide variety of discussions during the Diet debate. There are concerns over the reduction of post offices in remote places, but I understand that this is not the case.

(On rise of crude oil prices)
Rise in the oil price hasn't been transferred onto the product prices until now. Businesses are trying utmost to keep stable supply under stable prices. There could be minor effects in the economy if current trend would continue, but the situation may improve if crude oil price comes down below $40 per barrel.

(On alleged illegal political donation by Japan Dental Association and its relationship with political donation in general)
Political donation that Nippon Keidanren wants to promote is directed towards political party headquarters, not at politicians or their offices. Nippon Keidanren is also aiming at policy-based politics and improving political transparencies. Its objectives are very much different from that of the alleged case.

(On new party leadership of Democratic Party of Japan)
Since DPJ has a large group of influential politicians, the party requires strong leadership and solidarity to create a dual party system in Japan.
