Chairman Okuda's Press Conference

January 24, 2005

Following is the gist of remarks made by Mr. Hiroshi Okuda, Chairman, Nippon Keidanren, at a press conference on January 24, 2005. Translation is rush and tentative, and sequence of the gist does not necessarily coincide with words delivered.

(On business sector support on earthquake and tsunami off the Sumatra Island)

According to our survey, until now, 4.5 billion yen in cash and goods were donated by Japan's businesses. The amount is expected to increase further.

(On post office reforms)

Privatization of post office will bring about a smaller government. This should shift flow of the government money and raise transparency. Fear on elimination of universal services is very much unlikely and unfounded. The road before privatization may not be smooth, but I expect the law will be passed.

(On the government payroll)

While expenditure on social security area expected to increase as the time goes on, the government should cut expenditure in other area. At this moment, the biggest task of the government is to cut its payroll of the central and local governments. Keidanren should discuss about the number of payroll and salaries to them in 2005.
