March 22, 2005

Following is the gist of remarks made by Mr. Hiroshi Okuda, Chairman, Nippon Keidanren, at a press conference on March 22, 2005. Translation is rush and tentative, and sequence of the gist does not necessarily coincide with words delivered.

(On restarting import of the U. S. beef)

Food Safety Commission should meet more frequently to hold scientific discuss so that the U. S. would learn Japan is sincerely trying to solve the issue.

(On Livedoor's attempt at buying Nippon Broadcasting System, Inc.)

Reforms are necessary on laws governing commercial code, securities transactions, broadcasting, and radio transmission.

(On Japan-Korea relationship)

It is regrettable that Takeshima issue causing halt in recent progress in cultural and economic exchanges stall between the two countries. Both countries should keep their calm.

(On Expo 2005)

The theme "nature's wisdom" is very timely. Those concerned should take necessary measures on congestion related problems.
