Chairman Okuda's Press Conference

April 25, 2005

Following is the gist of remarks made by Mr. Hiroshi Okuda, Chairman, Nippon Keidanren, at a press conference on April 25, 2005. Translation is rush and tentative, and sequence of the gist does not necessarily coincide with words delivered.

(On Japan-China relationship)

It is important that premier of the two nations met in Indonesia to discuss topics of mutual interest - each had to take national interest into concern. China has 2008 Beijing Olympics and 2010 Shanghai International Exposition on its agenda, and it should act according to necessity. Japan should state what it should, including compensation to its diplomatic outposts. In any case, everybody concerned must remain cool. Outstanding issues between two nations need time to resolve, but businesses must maintain committed to keep their good relationships.

(On weekend election results)

LDP has won and its endeavor to economic reform of Prime Minister Koizumi will gain momentum.

(On measures against corporate takeover)

Japanese companies could buy Japanese companies - same for the foreign companies. Companies should take measures against takeover within current legal framework. It appears that many companies are waiting before changing corporate constitutions.

(On promotion of contents/software businesses)

It is certain that contents/software businesses will form an important part of Japan's economy in years to come, and this is an international trend. Keidanren will support that. In doing so, these new businesses should not remain dormant to keep themselves to stay away from violent and other areas which might negatively affect the society.
