Chairman Okuda's Press Conference

May 9, 2005

Following is the gist of remarks made by Hiroshi Okuda, Chairman, Keidanren at a scheduled press conference following monthly Chairman and Vice Chairmen's meeting on 9 May 2005. Translation is rush and tentative, and sequence of the gist does not necessarily coincide with words delivered.

(On West Japan Railway Company (JR West) train accident)

Train derailment accident is regrettable. Keidanren decided to take action and informed JR West that it should voluntarily refrain from its membership activities.

(On EPA (FTA) with China)

EPA with China would be technically more difficult than those with Singapore and Mexico. It might take time, but both the government and businesses should study it. Keidanren would also like to study EPA with the U. S. at early stage.

(On inviting ITER to Japan)

The government is trying hard to invite ITER to Japan, but I learned recently that it is difficult. Keidanren will work on the government again to realize invitation.
