Chairman Mitarai's comment at his press conference

November 26, 2007

Following is the gist of remarks made by Chairman Mitarai at his Press Conference. Translation is rush and tentative, and sequence of the gist does not necessarily coincide with words delivered.

( Labor-management negotiations )

Keidanren's basic stance on the next spring labor-management negotiations is under discussion. It is due to be published in the middle of December.
It goes without saying that each company should decide how much he pays through negotiations with his own trade union. It is only natural that companies should consider their abilities and capabilities in the process.

( Road related taxes for wider purposes in financial difficulty )

The basic finance policy decided in 2006 must be firmly maintained. Roads desperately needed for better and safer life of people as well as for stronger economy must be built.
National debate on the road-linked tax revenue should by all means be held. The discussion must go keeping a simple and basic principle in mind that buyers must pay.

( The result of the latest Australian national election )

The race winner Mr. Rudd has pledged to sign the Kyoto Protocol on climate change. It is a welcome policy decision.
The Japan-Australia EPA must be realized without delay. The target is a high quality agreement. Two economic giants, Japan and Australia deserve it. In the negotiation process, sensitive issues such as agriculture should be fully discussed.
