February 25, 2008

Following is the gist of remarks made by Chairman Mitarai at his Press Conference. Translation is rush and tentative, and sequence of the gist does not necessarily coincide with words delivered.

( Global warming issue )

GHG emission reduction, a serious global issue demands specific targets of total emission from each country. Japan, the chair of the next G8 Summit, should hold comprehensive discussions without sticking to one thought to lead all the major emission countries to the world-wide effort.

( Japanese version of Sovereign Wealth Fund )

Does Japan need its own SWF? What she needs is careful debate. There are a lot of questions to be answered. Would it be another failure case of public-owned finance institution? Would it be appropriate to use public money in risk-taking markets?

( South Korean new government )

The president from business sector knows a lot about economic policy and shows a positive stance on Japan-Korea relations. It is just great. With a strong initiative of the new leader, the Japan-Korea EPA is anticipated to be born early to contribute to further development of business ties between the two countries.
