Chairman Mitarai's comment at his press conference

April 7, 2008

Following is the gist of remarks made by Chairman Mitarai at his Press Conference. Translation is rush and tentative, and sequence of the gist does not necessarily coincide with words delivered.

( G8 business summit hosted by Keidanren )

Eleven business organization leaders from G8 member countries get together in Keidanren on April 17. The purpose of the meeting is to get views and voices of the business community well reflected in the coming July G8 summit dialogue. The following five issues will be discussed by the business leaders:

  1. Getting economy stable and ensuring its growing
  2. Promoting innovation and protecting patent right
  3. Tackling with global warming
  4. Liberalizing systems on trade and investment
  5. Helping developing countries catch up through their economic growth

( Road related taxes for wider purposes )

Prime Minister Fukuda has proposed that revenues from road-related taxes should be used for general purposes. It is impressive. Discussion should follow and go into the details, paying close attention to necessity of road construction.
The tentative tax rate issue should also be included in the upcoming comprehensive tax reform debate to be concluded within this year. The expiration of the provisional rate would cause a large shortage of revenue. It is hard to imagine seeing it disappears with no alternative financial measures taken.
The controversial tax issue should be fully discussed by the ruling and opposite parties only for the people and regions. Politics live just for it.

( Consumer first society )

The Japanese society has been greatly changing its systems into more consumer-oriented ones. Industries welcome the historical conversion. The single window of consumer administration under debate is a part of the stream of the times. When creating one stop agency in this field, it is necessary to carry out reforms on a scrap and build basis.
