Chairman Mitarai's comment at his press conference

May 12, 2008

Following is the gist of remarks made by Chairman Mitarai at his Press Conference. Translation is rush and tentative, and sequence of the gist does not necessarily coincide with words delivered.

( Economic relations between Japan and China )

PRC President Hu Jintao's latest visit was a big success. The Japanese and Chinese government agreed to receive the counterpart government leader on a regular basis. It laid the foundation of giant steps toward closer bilateral relations between Japan and China. The two business partners need to live together. It is quite important for the government leaders to deepen their mutual understanding to further develop the economic relations.

( The Fukuda vision: Long-term emission goal )

Prime Minister Fukuda, host of the coming G8 summit, showed his strong will to lead the meeting to a great success. Any comment is hard to make until his idea takes a shape. The name of the game is not only setting target to reduce CFC emissions but also implementing approaches to the target.
Sustainable economic growth and measures against global warming must go together. That is the point. Policies for encouraging companies to innovate green technologies should never be missed. Concrete measures to tackle global warming issue should be included in the Fukuda vision.

( Road related taxes for wider purposes )

Taking a negative influence on local finance and people's life into a serious consideration, Prime Minister Fukuda has no choice but pass the bill, which enables local governments to use the revenues from road-related taxes in line with the fiscal 2008 budget. It is likely that the cabinet members will decide tomorrow to use road related tax revenues for general purposes after FY 2009. Discussion between the ruling and opposite parties should start immediately towards the upcoming comprehensive tax reform. In the process, necessity of road construction should also be discussed throughly.
