Chairman Mitarai's comment at his press conference

July 7, 2008

Following is the gist of remarks made by Chairman Mitarai at his Press Conference. Translation is rush and tentative, and sequence of the gist does not necessarily coincide with words delivered.

( The world economy and the U.S. economy )

Weaker dollar together with increasing demand for natural resources in the developing countries have caused world wide inflation while economies in developed countries are slowing down. The U.S. economy seemed to pick up in the latter half of 2008, but the Subprime Mortgage Problem is still alive. It may further delay the recovery.

( Expectation for the G8 summit )

Global issues such as climate change, world-wide resource price inflation, aid to African countries' development and North Korea's nuclear weapons and abduction should be thoroughly discussed at the summit meeting. The global community is expecting the clear message of the G8 leaders on these key issues.

( Revision of law on dispatching temporary day laborers )

Compliance with the law must come first. In the process of revising the law, careful argument based on thorough analysis of the related jobs as well as on views and opinions of both management and laborer should never be missed. A ban on all temporary day work can take opportunities from job seekers.
