Chairman Mitarai's comment at his press conference

December 24, 2008

Following is the gist of remarks made by Chairman Mitarai at his Press Conference. Translation is rush and tentative, and sequence of the gist does not necessarily coincide with words delivered.

( The most impressive things in the year 2008 )

Number one is global financial turmoil. It has rapidly spread all over the world and has had a considerable negative impact on the real economy.
None has ever seen this before. Not only developed countries but also emerging economies and natural resource rich countries have taken prompt actions to improve the situation. This is new and bright.

Number two is a standstill in the Diet causing policy making delay. There are even some important Bills not yet on the table of lawmaker's deliberation. "Divided Diet" is no Japanese patent. Quick and sound business stimulus measures can not wait. Happiness of the people and national interest must come first. The government and political parties need to work harder together to get over the national crisis.

Number three is the result of the US presidential election. The US economic recovery is anticipated to pull the global business out of the current downturn. The new American leader is pledged to take drastic policy measures to boost the economy. The world is impatient to see it.

( Midterm Program to build sustainable social security and secure stable fiscal resources for it )

The global economy stands on the brink of deep depression. Japan is no exception and recovery of the economy is top priority now. At the same time, the social security system must be reformed into a sustainable one to sweep off people's concerns about the future. The program definitely shows what the government is going to do toward the goal.
