Chairman Mitarai's comment at his press conference

May 11, 2009

Following is the gist of remarks made by Chairman Mitarai at his Press Conference. Translation is rush and tentative, and sequence of the gist does not necessarily coincide with words delivered.

( The upcoming meeting with Russian Prime Minister Putin )

Russia has a huge economic potential in the fields of infrastructure projects as well as energy and natural resources development. The Japan-Russia relationship is anticipated to further develop through business in these areas.
I am going to have a policy dialogue with Prime Minister Putin tomorrow to discuss measures to fasten business ties between our two countries.

( Post Kyoto protocol )

The reduction of the greenhouse gas emission is a serious global challenge. All the countries responsible for a great amount of the emission need to join the Post Kyoto framework to prevent the global warming. Circumstances of individual countries must be fully considered and fairness in the global community must be secured when setting the new reduction target. The government committee on mid-term gas emission goal has shown 6 targets. The first choice is most reasonable and acceptable for the Japanese society.

( Restart of the Kashiwazaki nuclear power station )

I waited long for this very good news. The nuclear power will greatly contribute to the greenhouse gas emission as well as the stable supply of electricity. I visited the nuclear power station last summer and got deeply impressed to learn that quite a lot of people were working hard to ensure the safety of the facilities. The power plant could not have come back but for the understanding of local people. I would like to express my sincere appreciation to them as one of electricity users living in the metropolitan area.
