Chairman Mitarai's comment at his press conference

May 25, 2009

Following is the gist of remarks made by Chairman Mitarai at his Press Conference. Translation is rush and tentative, and sequence of the gist does not necessarily coincide with words delivered.

( Mid-term gas emission goal in the Post Kyoto framework )

PM Aso is expected to consider fairness in the international community, feasibility of the goal and adequacy of burden on the Japanese people when he decides the goal. The recent government survey contradicts itself. 45% chooses the target of 7% reduction compared to 1990, which imposes an extra burden of 5,000-15,000 yen a month on the people. The same research shows 60% is not willing to pay more than 1,000 yen a month. The people needs to know what the choices are and how much burden each of the options imposes on them. The government must do everything to help the people to understand it.

( Outlook of the Japanese economy )

The export has been increasing for the last two months. In particular, the export to Asian countries has recently exceeded the previous year's performance. The government and BOJ rightly revised their economic outlook upward.

( Underground nuclear test by North Korea )

What North Korea did threatens the security of East Asian countries. They will never get away with it. The Japanese government should work hard together with related nations to get tough with the country.
