Chairman Mitarai's comment at his press conference

January 12, 2010

Following is the gist of remarks made by Chairman Mitarai at his Press Conference. Translation is rush and tentative, and sequence of the gist does not necessarily coincide with words delivered.

The key policy issues need to be implemented in 2010

Japan has no bright future without solving a plenty of chronic problems. There is no time to lose. The country's fate depends on what she does this year. Keidanren has been committed to contribute to the national development. We released "policy stance statement" today to make our position clear before the Diet starts. Implementation of the strategy of economic growth as well as package reform of tax, fiscal and social security system are given top priority in our opinion paper.

The release has nothing to do with Keidanren's policy evaluation.

The Keidanren's mission to Indonesia

Mr. Naoshima, minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, and I had policy dialogue with President Yudhoyono as well as political and business leaders of the country on the Japan-Indonesia economic relation and its strategic cooperation for Asian economic growth.

Keidanren and ASEAN have agreed to work together to generate "Comprehensive Asia Development Plan".

During our stay in Jakarta, Mr. Surin, secretary general of ASEAN and the mission members discussed how to go ahead with this project in details. It was one of the results of our trip.

The success of the mission is a big step toward the upcoming Asia Business Summit hosted by Keidanren.
