February 8, 2010

Following is the gist of remarks made by Chairman Mitarai at his Press Conference. Translation is rush and tentative, and sequence of the gist does not necessarily coincide with words delivered.

Global warming

All the countries responsible for a great amount of green house gas emission must be involved and committed to their proper gas reduction in the Post Kyoto global effort. The Japanese government needs to continue international tough negotiations to form the new framework, paying close attention to fairness, feasibility and rationality of burden on the people. When policy measures to achieve the goal are discussed, scientific and objective analysis must be shown to the people, and their voice should never be neglected.

Labor-Management negotiations in the spring time

The Japanese economy is in the middle of deflation, still suffering from the aftereffect of the persistent global business downturn. This is the economic views shared by labor unions and management. The point is how good business performances are and how much money can be spared for personnel expenses in each company. Base upon the common recognition of the key issue, serious labor-management negotiations are expected to go individually towards a result satisfactory to both sides.
