Chairman Mitarai's comment at his press conference

April 19, 2010

Following is the gist of remarks made by Chairman Mitarai at his Press Conference. Translation is rush and tentative, and sequence of the gist does not necessarily coincide with words delivered.

The approval rate for the Cabinet

The cabinet came into the scene with the people's great expectations for the first time in about 50 years. Trial and error is unavoidable for a new government. Dealing with matters in a big turning point requires a lot of time. The government is expected to respond sincerely to the public mandate by solving challenges item by item.

New political parties

Formation of new parties is motivated by a sense of crisis and with a strong determination. Above all, new parties led by a series of actions of local chief executives such as mayor Yamada of Suginami and governor Hashimoto of Osaka are quite epoch-making in terms of request for public policy reforms from local politics. These movements deserve continued attention from the standpoint of larger administrative block system, about which Keidanren has promoted as a national campaign.

The earthquake in Qinghai, China

I heartily pray for the dead and sincerely feel sorry for the victims. Keidanren expressed its condolence and donated relief money for disaster to Chinese ambassador in Japan on April 15. Keidanren is providing information about the devastated area through the One Percent Club and appealing its member companies for contribution to aid agencies such as Japan Red Cross Society.
