TO REVITALIZE THE ECONOMY
Another pressing issue for Keidanren to address is the issue of revitalizing the economy. We Japanese must ensure steady economic growth as we approach the coming century. We must manage a transformation in our industrial structure. To accomplish those tasks, we businesspeople must manifest an entrepreneurial spirit. We must take the initiative in identifying promising new sectors. We must take it on ourselves to cultivate new industries. Keidanren can help and should help. We should call for easing or eliminating regulations that inhibit innovation or freedom in business activities. At the same time, we should encourage companies by calling attention to promising sectors and to next-generation technologies. We should urge the government to provide assistance for new ventures and to put in place infrastructure to furnish a framework for emerging industries. Keidanren has established a committee for new industries and new ventures. That committee will coordinate our efforts on behalf of entrepreneurial approaches to revitalizing the economy.
The third important issue for Keidanren to address is the issue of corporate responsibility. We need to establish principles of responsibility and promote a commitment to corporate ethics. Keidanren drafted a charter in September nineteen ninety-one that presents guidelines for ethical corporate behavior. Today, we must endeavor to restore people's confidence in business by rededicating ourselves to the principles of that charter. We businesspeople must establish rules of ethics on our own. And we must adhere rigorously to those rules.
