1. Nature conservation (Environment) Measure posture to activity
With awareness of the special responsibility held by all individuals and businesses in today's world to look after the global environment, Tokio Marine & Nichido, which includes global environmental protection in its corporate philosophy, pays consideration to the need for harmony with the global environment and the need for environmental improvement in all business activities carried out by all our employees, and is undertaking to bring about the realization of a society underpinned by sustainable development.
2. Cooperation with NGO
As part of the 120th anniversary celebrations of the founding of (former) Tokio Marine, our firm set out in 1999 on a Mangrove Reforestation Project with the aim of reforesting an area 3,000 hectares across five Southeast Asian Countries over a period of five years. This goal was successfully reached on schedule at the end of March 2004. As of April 2004, a second project phase commenced aiming to reforest a further 2,000 hectares over five more years. This project has been carried out with Tokio Marine & Nichido as the sole sponsor, performed in partnership with the two NGOs OISCA and Action for Mangrove Reforestation (ACTMANG).
3. Environmental education and volunteer training (employee)
The many activities we perform in this area include; (1) transmission of environment-related news and information through our company intranet and by satellite broadcast, (2) distribution and putting up of environmental awareness raising posters, (3) setting up a CSR Library, and (4) holding Marunouchi Townhall Environmental Forums.
- Mangrove Reforestation Volunteer Tours
- Environmental Education Classes for Children
One to two times a year, we call for participation in mangrove reforestation tours by employees, agents, retired former staff, group company employees and their families. Volunteers visit the reforestation areas, and then work with local people in actual mangrove planting. Up until now, around 200 people have participated as volunteers in these tours. Even after these trips, participants also give talks in various places, and engage in activities relating their experiences.
Tokio Marine & Nichido co-sponsors "Environmental Education Classes for Children" with the Tokyo YMCA, with the aim of youth development and environmental education. This is a scheme by which children from foster homes are invited to spend around two days and three nights in our nature experience classes, with our employees working as volunteer leaders. Volunteer leaders participate with a base of knowledge gathered from going through prior training on "leadership" and "the environment".
4. Environmental education (exterior)
- Holding of "Marunouchi Townhall Environmental Forums"

This goal was successfully reached on schedule at the end of 2004. The 3,000 hectares of mangroves reforested is estimated to have the potential to absorb the same volume of carbon dioxide emitted in the course of our business activities. As of April 2004, a second project phase commenced aiming to reforest a further 2,000 hectares over five more years in the previous five Southeast Asian Countries plus the newly added nation of Fiji. Now and into the future, our company will continue to aim to be a global warming neutral business.

Since 2003, Tokio Marine & Nichido has participated as the sole private financial institution exhibitor in "Eco-Products", Japan's largest Environmental Exhibition held at the "Tokyo Big Sight". Our exhibition booth was well received, featuring mangrove videos and the exhibition of a real mangrove in addition to panels around the booth highlighting our environment related insurance products. This proved to be a valuable opportunity to draw the attention of exhibition goers and to deepen understanding of our environmental initiatives.
We participate in a wide range of forums on environmental issues, and hold seminars on topics such as our mangrove reforestation operations.
Tokio Marine & Nichido participates in the government sponsored citizens' campaign against global warming known as "Team Minus 6%", and is promoting initiatives as part of this.
