1. Approach toward Nature (Environment) Conservation Project

  • "Toyota Earth Charter" summarizes fundamental concept of Toyota's approach toward global environmental issues. It consists of 4 basic policies, the 4th action item of which contains an initiative "Working in cooperation with society".
  • "Toyota Environmental Action Plan" summarizes medium-to and long- term activities and goals, along with the "Toyota Earth Charter", to promote environmental consideration at company-wide level. Currently, "Toyota Environmental Action Plan (from FY2006 to FY2010)" is being promoted.
  • At the 18th action item of the plan, "Promote new businesses that contribute to environmental improvement", an initiative "Expand existing and establish new biotechnology and reforestation business" is contained. And at the 20th action item of the plan, "Contribute to the development of a recycling-based society", an initiative is described "Implement philanthropic programs that contribute to the preservation of biodiversity".

2. Collaboration with NGOs

  • Toyota has been carrying out plans to create the Forest of Toyota since 1996. This model forest was established within Foresta Hills, on the outskirts of Toyota city, to revitalize satoyama (forests and wetlands near populated areas). Toyota shares the knowledge on reforestation acquired from this model forest with the public and implements environmental education through initiatives such as the Experience Nature Program. Toyota also offered environmental educational programs "Eco-no-mori Seminar" by co-hosting with Environmental Education Forum for the purpose of educating professional staff who gets involved in conserving satoyama and forestation activity. About 3,000 people had participated in this seminar during the 7 years from 1998 to 2004. In FY2006, information signs and guideposts were upgraded to include color illustrations and a Walking for Health program was initiated to help refresh the mind of body while walking through the forest. Events such as Parent and Child Forest Exploration-A One-day Program, where people can enjoy the forest, were held five times with the help of the local community. A total of 172 people took part. In FY 2006, 9,623 people visited the Forest of Toyota, bringing the total since its establishment to approximately 48,000 people.
  • Since 2001, Toyota has, together with the NPO Green Earth Center, participated in the 21st Century Greater Beijing Reforestation Model, an afforestation initiative in Fengning Man Autonomous County, Hebei Province, where significant desertification has occurred. Over the six years, trees were planted on approximately 2,500 hectares of land, contributing to the environmental protection of Fengning Man Autonomous County, which is an important water source for Beijing and Tianjin. From April 2007 to March 2011, Toyota aims for afforestation of another 500 hectares of land, as well as construction of the 21st Century Greater Beijing Afforestation Center (scheduled to open in June 2008) to foster afforestation experts and disseminate information on greening technology. Through these measures, Toyota aims to create a structure to further expand afforestation activities in China.

3. Environmental Education and Volunteer Training (Employee)

  • In the Global Environment Month in every June, as an educational activity to raise employee's environmental awareness, Toyota organized a variety of events, such as the Global Environmental Lecture and TOYOTA Shirakawa-Go Eco-Institute Tour of Inspection.
  • For the purpose of supporting volunteer activities for employees, their families and ex-employees, Toyota established Toyota Volunteer Center in 1993. In order that they could work pleasantly and safely, the center offered various kinds of support to them, such as information disclosure and educational activities, encouraging the scope of activity to expand and their self-reliance. They also provided opportunities to experience supportive activities, such as interaction with the handicapped children and the aged people, forest development and experience of volunteer activities in a time of disaster.

4. Environmental Education (External)

  • For the purpose of educating professional staff who gets involved in conserving satoyama (forests and wetlands near populated areas) and forestation activity, Toyota held an environmental educational program "Eco-no-mori Seminar" by co-hosting with Environmental Education Forum. Toyota also offered a variety of projects and programs, such as Satoyama Interpreters Camp and Experience Nature program in order to train people who would play a key role in promoting 21st century-type satoyama society.
  • In April, 2005, Toyota opened TOYOTA Shirakawa-Go Eco-Institute in Shirakawa, Gifu Prefecture. The institute is operated by the NPO, "Shirakawa-go Nature Coexistence Forum", which was established jointly by (1)the municipality of Shirakawa, (2)the Japan Environmental Education Forum and other environmental NPOs and (3)Toyota. Taking an advantage of the culture of Shirakawa-Go and abundant natural environment at the foot of Mt. Hakusan, Toyota offered experience in nature-type environmental education for children, who would play an important role in realizing the sustainable development. At the Eco-Institute, the program is based around three types of hand-on learning concerning (1)experiencing nature (Black bear watching, etc.), (2)environmental technologies (Building wood biomass pallets, etc.) and (3)traditional culture (Observing wild silkworms and creating a habitat, etc.)

5. Utilization and Conservation of Company-Owned Fields

  • The Forest of Toyota at company-owned field in Toyota city, Aichi prefecture
  • TOYOTA Shirakawa-Go Eco-Institute at company-owned field in Shirakawa village, Gifu prefecture.

6. Afforestation and Silvicultural Activities

  • In order to control desertification in Fengning Man County in Hebei Province, China, Toyota worked with the Chinese Academy of Sciences and NPO Green Earth Center. The three-year first and second phase was responsible for the planting of 2,500 hectares of forestation for 6 years (FY2001-FY2006). From April 2007 to March 2011, Toyota aims for afforestation of another 500 hectares of land, as well as construction of the 21st Century Greater Beijing Afforestation Center (scheduled to open in June 2008) to foster afforestation experts and disseminate information on greening technology.
  • Toyota established Toyota Roof Garden Co., Ltd., in December 2001, which operates roof garden business utilizing peat mined in China. Chinese peat is lightweight yet has excellent water-retention properties, which is also effective to be used in thin layered roof. Mining of peat begun in March 2003, shipment to Japan begun in April 2003, and cumulative sales of peat since then of more than 3,000m2 through Toyota Roof Garden. Total area of roof gardens installed reaches 26,000m2, contributing to alleviate heat island effect through the installation of roof gardens at Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly building.

7. Others

  • Toyota has been accepting applications to the Environmental Activities Grant Program to support projects involved in research and other activities centered on the theme "Environmental Technology and Human Resource Development Contributing to Environment Revitalization and Conservation" in commemoration of Toyota's receipt of the Global 500 Award, from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). 548 applications were received in FY2006. The program's selection committee, consisting of a group of experts from Japan and elsewhere around the world, deliberated intensely and judged the entries on criteria such as appropriateness of the projects and continuity and future development. Thirteen projects were selected under the category of "general grants", and 12 under the category of "small-scale grants" (projects in Japan). Grants amounted to a total of approximately 170 million yen. During the 7 years from FY2000 to FY2006, 113 projects in 40 countries have received a total of approximately 1.24 billion yen worth of funding.
