1. Corporate principles or corporate policies on Biodiversity
"The Preservation of Ecosystems" is one of the three pillars of Hitachi Group's Environmental Vision along with "the Prevention of Global Warming", "the Conservation of Resources'".
We try to understand the dependence and influence of corporate activities on ecosystem services and to contribute to preserve ecosystems.
Through our business, we provide products or services that will preserve ecosystems, such as purification of air, water and soil.
Moreover, in order to reduce negative effects to ecosystems throughout product lifecycle, activities such as energy and resource conservation are continuously promoted. In addition, social contribution activities through the nature conservation such as tree planting are being made to help recover ecosystems.

2. Activities on Biodiversity on the business operations
- (1) Ballast Water Purification System <ClearBallast>
- Since ballast water (seawater that keeps a ship stable when the ship has no cargo) discharges in a port which contains plankton and others, there is a problem that the plankton etc. become non-native species in the port. Ballast Water Purification System <ClearBallast> purifies ballast water by using Coagulation & Magnetic Separation Method which can purify ballast water with magnet. As it requires no toxic chemicals, there is no risk of marine pollution and also it can be processed at a high-speed.
- (2) Solar-powered desalination facility
- We are contributing to protect Arabian Oryx, one of the endangered species. Hitachi group provides 'solar-powered desalination facility' for the project to protect Arabian Oryx. With this system, it is possible to make the place for Arabian Oryx to drink water in the desert.
3. Activities on Biodiversity as social responsible activities
- (1) Volunteer Experience Tour to Horqin Desert Greening Project in China
- In cooperation with the government of Tongliao in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of China and G-Net, a Japanese NPO, we organize desert greening and desertification prevention activities for Hitachi Group employees and their family every year since 2007. The aim is to restore vegetation and wildwood of the Horqin desert in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of China, which is the closest desert to Japan and one of the causes for yellow sand blown over to Japan.
- (2) Activities to Conserve Endangered Butterfly Living Near Mt. Fuji
- In cooperation with a Japanese NPO Earthwatch Institute which helps scientists and researchers who are investigating and studying the natural environment and wildlife, we take part in one of its projects to conserve endangered butterfly living near Mt. Fuji since 2006.
4. Environmental education
- (1) Hitachi Volunteer Seminar
- Hitachi holds 'Hitachi Volunteer Seminar' several times a year for Hitachi Group employees. It is to create opportunities to start volunteering by understanding and knowing the fun of volunteer activities through the volunteer experience at the office where the employees can participate easily and the conversation with the lecturer and participants.
- (2) Hitachi Volunteer Support Program 'The Growing Tree'
- The program provides funding to support specific activities of Japanese non-profit organizations that Hitachi Group's employees in Japan are participating either in person or financially and that are making an ongoing commitment to highly public, socially important work.
