1. Nature conservation (Environment) Measure posture to activity

We set "Environmental Conservation at the regional level" as one of the highest priority issues in "HEPCO Group Environmental Policies" and reinforce various measures for natural protection.

  • The environmental impact assessment is a system of investigating, forecasting and evaluating the impact of a development project on the environment prior to implementation. To ensure environmental preservation measures are satisfactory, the results are made public, and the opinions of local residents are taken into consideration.
  • With regard to the greening of the premises of power stations and other facilities we take the surrounding natural landscape and local vegetation into consideration.
  • In east (the Kushiro and Nemuro) Districts, where exist many invaluable natural environments, the routes of electric wires are selected only after investigations on nesting areas and flight routes of rare birds when installing new transmission and distribution lines. HEPCO has installed yellow indicator tubes, yellow rings as measures to prevent bird collisions.
We also install perches on utility poles to prevent birds from electric shock.

  • We provide our customers with booklets on the natural animals in Kushiro and Nemuro Districts as one of the conservation activities of the local

  • Wetland protection activities
HEPCO is constructing the Kyogoku Hydroelectric Power Station, the first pure pumped-storage power station in Hokkaido, to the east of Mt. Yotei. In proceeding with the construction work, we have been doing our utmost to preserve the Kyogoku Mire around the Upper Reservoir area by taking measures intended to mitigate environmental burdens and understanding the construction's impact on the environment through monitoring.
  • 2. Cooperation with NGO

In corporation with the HAMANASU Foundation, Hepco reinforces the Hokkaido Green Electricity Fund to solicit subsidies for photovoltaic power, wind power and other natural energy sources.

    3. Environmental education and volunteer training (employee)

In principle, we provide environmental education to our employees through routine work. Supplementing this, we give lectures on environmental problems in level-based group education, such as introductory training for newly hired employees. We also provide our employees and group companies employees with e-learning about the environment. We also support the acquisition of environment-related qualifications.

    4. Environmental education (exterior)

To support the nurturing of the youths who will lead the future of Hokkaido, we established laboratory classes where children learn about new energy sources and the environment while having fun through experiments, handicrafts and other experiences.

    5. Practical use and preservation of the company-owned ground etc.

As one of the events commemorating the 50th anniversary of the foundation, "the Water and Green Forest", which pays attention to the ecosystem in which diverse creatures live, has been developed on the premises of the Research & Development Department (Ebetsu City).
The forest is divided into three zones, where abundant natural environments are created by planting a variety of trees in harmony with the surrounding natural forest. In the future, we are planning to provide a place where the neighborhood can come in contact with nature in accordance with the growth of the trees.

    6. Woods structure activities of afforestation, silviculture, etc.

  • Afforestation in land owned by Isoya River No. 1 Power Station

  • Participation in Overseas Afforestation Programs

  • Participation in joint survey concerning the CO2 absorption of forests
