1. Nature Conservation (Environment) Measure posture to activity
At Maeda, we pursue environmental initiatives on a companywide basis through the Maeda Environmental Policy.
The Maeda Environmental Policy consists of the Fundamental Principle, the Fundamental Policies, and the Approaches for Environmental Initiatives. They are followings,
- Fundamental Principle
Through all of our business activities, Maeda aims to bring about a sustainable society by creating an environment where people and nature can coexist in harmony and by striving to reduce the environmental burden.
- Fundamental Policies
We have established five Fundamental Policies for the furtherance of the Fundamental Principle:
- Make proposals to our clients that take into account environmental consideration.
- Develop and deploy environmental technologies.
- Work to reduce the environmental burden at every stage of business activities.
- Observe legal requirements, disclose information, and cooperate with society and local governments, befitting our obligations as a corporate citizen.
- Make effective use of the EMS to continuously improve our environmental efforts.
- Approaches for Environmental Initiatives
We have established seven approaches to bringing these Fundamental Policies into our business activities:
- Abundant greenery and open space
- Clean water and air
- Efficient energy use
- Zero emission
- Lengthening the life-span of buildings constructed
- Pollution prevention and recovery
- Pleasant living environment
2. Cooperation with NGO
Employees can check information about various voluntary activities anytime on the company's LAN system web-site and participation of each activity has been encouraged.
3. Environmental education and volunteer training (employee)
- On a companywide basis
Maeda is conducting environmental education at the training for recruits, five years-experienced employees, and those who are on the post.
- On a branch basis
The training about environment is conducted at each work-yard and meetings to exchange knowledge & opinions about environment are held between the head office and the branch offices.
4. Environmental education (aiming at outside of the company)
The head office and the branch offices organize the workshop to subcontractors so that they can also get familiar with the environmental issues.
5. Practical use and preservation of the company-owned ground etc.
A technological research center in Nerima expands the greenery area at the company-owned ground and keeps good harmony with neighbors.
6. Forest management, afforestation, etc.
- As a celebration event of the 50th foundation anniversary, Maeda started the plan "Yutakana Midori wo Motto (More abundant green)" which aimed to increase the trees. 3,700 trees in Japan and 7,700 trees in foreign countries finished to be planted, and each work-yard is taking care of them as a voluntary activity.
- In Japan, Maeda is energetically working on reproducing the environment of indigenous flora at rural civil engineering site, especially the site of construction where there is a heavy growth of indigenous flora.
- Maeda also keeps implementing a sustainable afforestation activity in foreign countries. Even after a celebration event of the 50th foundation anniversary, 20,500 trees were planted at schools, temples, and along main roads in Cambodia. This afforestation was achieved by cooperation with local people, students, and 'Lions-Club'.
7. Conservation activities of biodiversity
Maeda is taking comprehensive conservation measures of fauna & flora at sites of construction (civil engineering <rural>, especially dams) in Japan.
- Transplantation of endangered species of plants existing (Kyogoku Dam in Hokkaido, Isawa Dam in Iwate Prefecture, Upper side of South Aiki Dam in Nagano Prefecture)
- Consideration to prevent extraneous DNA of seeds used for slope planting work from mixing into indigenous ones (Daiwa Dam at Amami-ohshima Island in Kagoshima Prefecture)
- Setting up the fence to prevent animals from coming inside of the work (Upper side of South Aiki Dam in Nagano Prefecture)
- Construction of the unlined gutter with the slope to enable even small animals to escape from the gutter by themselves (Kyogoku Dam in Hokkaido)
- Turning color of temporary constructions into protective pale coloration which is green to the nature environment (Otori Dam in Fukusima Prefecture)
- Work-Time of engineering is flexible to be restricted, and construction is temporary stopped during the nesting period (Otori Dam in Fukusima Prefecture, Isawa Dam in Iwate Prefecture)
- Transformation of landform caused by temporary constructions is minimally limited (Upper side of South Aiki Dam in Nagano Prefecture)
- There are some prohibition measures settled during the night-time work, and construction machines which cause low noise are used (Otori Dam in Fukusima Prefecture, Daiwa Dam at Amami-oshima Island in Kagoshima Prefecture)
- Conservation of fish with drainage which is below the environmental standard (Masutani Dam in Fukui Prefecture, Tsunakigawa Dam in Yamagata Prefecture, Daiwa Dam at Amami-oshima Island in Kagoshima Prefecture)
8. Others
- "Maeda Engineering Foundation" subsidizes academic research in the engineering field, and supports the personnel training.
- As support activities in the social welfare field, Maeda backs up the event held under 'Nippon Charity Kyokai Association' and offers it a hall for the event. Employees also voluntarily participate in the event.
