Only Strong Political Will Can Save the WTO Doha Round

Nippon Keidanren joined by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and Business Roundtable have long worked cooperatively for a successful conclusion of the WTO Doha Development Agenda (DDA) negotiations to promote global economic growth. But with the failure of WTO members to date to agree on how to expand market access for agricultural and non-agricultural products, we are increasingly concerned with the prospects of the DDA negotiations.

To reach a successful completion of a comprehensive and ambitious Doha Round, market access modalities should be formulated by the end of this month.

Further postponement invites DDA's failure, which would undermine the promise of economic growth inherent in the DDA. By contrast, renewed dedication to comprehensive and ambitious liberalization for agriculture, industrial products and services, and stronger political leadership by WTO members to achieve these goals would bestow the tremendous benefits that accrue from trade liberalization.

Nippon Keidanren joined by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and Business Roundtable are committed to working for the ultimate success of the DDA negotiations.

An ambitious and comprehensive outcome for the Doha Round can only be achieved if strong political leadership is exerted.
