Chairman Okuda's Press Conference

July 11, 2005

Following is the gist of remarks made by Hiroshi Okuda, Chairman, Keidanren at a scheduled press conference following monthly Chairman and Vice Chairmen's meeting on 11 July 2005. Translation is rush and tentative, and sequence of the gist does not necessarily coincide with words delivered.

(On government-led bid-rigging and golden parachuting)

Keidanren will study these issues carefully. Relation between the two issues is not easily defined at this moment. The news report Keidanren will ask its member companies not to accept a former government employee is incorrect. There are cases that companies could benefit by employing former government officials as their employees. The government will have to think twice if businesses won't accept retired government employees. The issue does not have an easy answer so Keidanren should spend time in studying them.

(On G8 Summit and bombing in London)

Let me offer my deepest condolence to those lost their lives in London bombing. The bombing might have taken away time from G8 leaders to discuss on issues such as global warming, international trade, and high crude oil prices.

(On privatization of postal services)

I do hope that the bill will be passed at the House of Councilors in due time.

(On health issue involving asbestos)

Health hazard caused by asbestos has been publicly known for long time, and government should have acted earlier.
