March 23, 2010

Following is the gist of remarks made by Chairman Mitarai at his Press Conference. Translation is rush and tentative, and sequence of the gist does not necessarily coincide with words delivered.

The current situation and outlook of the Japanese economy

The economy shows good and bad signs.
The export and production have recovered. Company executives see business is getting better. On the other hand, the capital investment has not so much improved. The individual consumption is not yet strong enough to pull the economy upward. The Japanese economy has not entered into the private-sector-driven-recovery phase. The outlook of the economy is unpredictable for the time being.

Partnership with Asian countries

The stability and prosperity of the global economy is unthinkable without Asia's commitment and contribution. Japan lives in Asia, grows with Asia and works with Asia.
Keidanren and the Japanese government share the basic stance and policy of Asian business affairs. Asian countries have no patience to sit back and watch the cooperation.
The government and private sector of Japan need to work together to expand business demand of Asia, as well as improve infrastructure over a wide area in the region. Asian countries expect further contribution of Japan both in financial and technical fields.
